On the first day of Royal Ascot, the crowd rejoices in a string of winning favourites. Ned Talbot has worked all his life as a bookmaker--taking over the family business from his grandfather--so he knows not to expect any sympathy from the punters as they count their winnings, and he counts his losses. He's seen the ups and downs before--but, as the big gambling conglomerates muscle in on small concerns like his, Ned wonders if it's worth it any more.

I find the Francis books great reads--well thought out mystery and solution. I have one quibble, though: The women in their books, including this one, are such sickly, weak people. When a strong female character appears, she gets passed over as somehow unsuitable and fades into the background. The strong male heroes don't seem to be able to handle a healthy give and take relationship. They're basically loners.

I am a great fan of D.F., but I found his main character in this novel to be extremely depressing. He spent too much time reflecting on how much bookies are hated. I'd give it a one star.
