Based on Tim Burton's latest animated film, Frankenweenie: A Novel recounts the heart-warming tale of a boy and his (dead) dog in full. The story follows Victor, a clever, quiet, scientifically minded boy, who lives in the Burbank-esque town of New Holland. Victor's only friend is his dog, Sparky, who dies when he is hit by a car, but is reanimated by Victor. Children who enjoyed the film, will love to read more about Victor and his pet dog who is brought back to life.

Typed in white letters on black pages, “Frankenweenie” combines the whimsical with the morbid in its story as well as its visual outlay. (I was drawn to the unusual nature of its type and glad that its contents did not disappoint.) It is both a cautionary tale of meddling with matters of life and death and the extraordinary love of a boy for his dog. Ms. Rudnick’s adaptation captures Mr. Burton’s trademark ghoulish humor, especially when Victor’s innocent hubris has unintended consequences. Whether you see the movie or not, “Frankenweenie” is a quirky indulgence for children and their adults.
