Chief Inspector Gamache is called to a tiny Quebec village and there he finds the art world gathered, and with it a world of shading and nuance, a world of shadow and light. Where nothing is as it seems. Behind every smile there lurks a sneer. Inside every sweet relationship there hides a broken heart. And even when facts are slowly exposed, it is not longer clear to Gamache and his team if what they've found is the truth, or simply a trick of the light.

I enjoyed this book a little more than I did her other that I read — perhaps it was because it was audio (on a long road trip). A newly acclaimed artist has just had a prestigious one-woman show and, at the invitation-only reception at her home, a dead body was discovered in her garden. Turns out it was her first best friend from grade school, with whom she had had a falling out and hadn’t seen in over a decade.

Inspector Gamache and a host of friends, friend-of-friends, and others collected clues to solve the mystery of who did it. i was rather impressed with Penny’s research into the art world, gallery behavior, critics, artists, etc. She pulls back the elegant and sophisticated veneer and exposes the underbelly. Ground-breaking literary fare it wasn’t, but it made for an entertaining drive.

As a fan of the series from the beginning, I loved that this novel focused on the art world and the volatile temperament of creative types. Drinking (and AA) also factored hugely in the novel. However, it may just be me getting tired of Penny's writing style, but the musings and philosophical tone began to irritate me this time around. For being the preeminent homicide team it seems they are often befuddled. I will continue with the next few books, but my interest is waning...

In this latest entry Inspector Gamache and his team must solve the murder of a woman who nobody apparently knew. As it turns out most the suspects did know her and had reasons to kill her. One by one all the suspects exhibit suspicious behaviour which implicates them until such time as explanations for their behaviour are revealed. Ultimately, the murderer is exposed in parlour fashion. Along the way Penny explores the concepts of forgiveness, whether people can actually change, and how people can hurt those closest to them willingly. A Trick of the Light is a worthy read.

This was wonderful to listen to in the car each day! Louise Penny has beautiful, expressive writing. I will definitely read more from her.
