An extra star for Glenn Close's stunning performance as Albert, a cross-dressing woman whose ability to pass as a manservant gives her a sort of freedom in a harsh, class-stratified Victorian Dublin. All changes when she meets another woman also passing as a man---who is happily married and whose gregarious and generous attitude opens up a less lonely vista for the reserved Albert and her orphan past. Naive to love, she starts to ponder how to create a relationship and daydreams about using her painstakingly saved wages to buy a little shop. Albert sets her heart upon one of the hotel maids (also well-played by Mia Wasikowska) in a bumpy, near-impossible romance, winding up in a love triangle.

Glenn Close always turns in strong performances, but this one is magnificent; a career high. This film is highly recommended.

This is a 2011 British-Irish drama directed by Rodrigo García, based on a 1927 novella by George Moore.
It is an extraordinarily bizarre and heartwrenching story.
Superb is the performance of Glenn Close as Albert Nobbs.

A top notch film; this one will grab you; unless you are a liberal: they have no heart. The story takes place before Bruce decided to dress-up like a woman--the cowardly swine didn't have them cut-off, so he is not a truly depraved LGBRTQFD.

I admit I didn't know it was Glenn Close until after I saw the movie. She fooled me; great acting!

The main character is a waiter, who is in fact a woman. The script is just OK. Slightly entertaining only.

It is best to watch this film without expectations or preconceptions: It is an excellent film in presenting socioeconomic survival tactics in the 19th century.
I do not hold with the boring and lost interest statements: You will be thinking about the film after it is over--Glenn Close's acting of the "sedate" Nobbs, I feel, was right on the money once you understand the childhood history of the character. The film is extremely touching and bittersweet.

Stopped watching half way through. Super dry, boring and lacking in real plot. As well, it's hard watching historical films through the lens of today. Is this an accurate recreation of what it was like for "Albert"? Not a chance. . .
