"I was 50 pages into this terrific book when I realized it was one of Putnam’s Young Reader books. I was reading a novel written for teenagers. Sophisticated urban teenagers."

The Guardian review is harsher than my own reaction to the book's writing although there are several areas where I agree. Particularly, the plot has weaknesses and odd hops in logic. The most unnecessary weakness of the book is the setting and role of the Bat Lady character. Redeeming these weaknesses are flashes of solid writing which made this reader finish the book in a more or less continuous read. If you can suspend judgement on the weaknesses in the plot (generally a given in books for teens which usually have a few unlikely coincidences) then you'll find this a worthwhile book to read during a winter's snow day.

I didn't know that I picked up a youth book by Coben. Maybe it's cool for teenagers, but for adult readers it's rather simplistic, cliched, and over the top. And what's the deal with melting kidnapping, white slavery, prostitution with the Holocaust (again) and those mean, mean Nazis (again). Get a life Coben and stick to adult novels that deals with current 21st century events, not tired tearjerkers from more than half a century ago.

I really enjoyed this book. It was quick-paced, and whenever you think the mystery is solved, another one begins. I liked the characters, especially Ema. I definately reccomend this book, and hope there's a sequel.

This was one of the books that I got through's early readers program. Each month a list of new books comes out, you can volunteer to receive a copy of the books that you find interesting. Your name is placed in a drawing, and you can receive these books in the mail for absolutely free and before they're even available in stores. They do this so that they can get feedback and reviews for the book's release.

I've never read Harlan Coben before, so this was my first introduction to the author and I'm so glad that I was able to find him.

Mickey Bolitar is a high school kid whose mother is a drug addict and whose Dad was recently killed in a car accident. However, this isn't your typical sob story, or tale of teenage wasteland mishaps. Mickey's uncle has taken him in while his mother is in rehab. He meets another newbie and they instantly make a connection only for her to disappear a week later with no trace.

While the scenario seems overplayed and overwritten, the outcome and writing of this book is not what you will expect. I read this in a little over 24 hours, I couldn't put it down and the style and dialogue had me actually chuckling out loud. If you're looking for a great read that will have you flipping pages and smiling and cringing then Shelter is for you. I'm looking forward to Harlan's next Mickey Bolitar novel.
