The history of eighty-three most popular operas detailing plots, characters and performers, musical terms, great conductors, and audiences. Impertinent and illuminating, it will delight and madden opera lovers everywhere.

This is by far my favorite book about the opera with synopses of various operas. Written by the former deputy chair of Covent Garden, the book is an irreverent look at specific operas and opera in general by someone who really knows his stuff. Much more fun than the usual stuffy books. Highly recommended.
