Strange things are happening in Maya's tiny Vancouver Island town. First, her friend Serena, the captain of the swim team, drowns mysteriously in the middle of a calm lake. Then, one year later, mountain lions are spotted rather frequently around Maya's home--and her reactions to them are somewhat ... unexpected. Her best friend, Daniel, has also been experiencing unexplainable premonitions about certain people and situations.

The idea started off quite nicely and I truly enjoyed visualizing the scenes and the characters. There was enough detail to picture main ideas but also enough room to leave the imagination to do its work. I really liked how the idea of a "skin-walker/werewolf" was not made as repetitive and overrated as some supernatural book series are. Maya is a protagonist with interesting quirks, although I'd say the romance in this trilogy isn't the best. But as a Canadian, we've got to support each other!

”The Gathering” by Kelley Armstrong, is one of many intriguing books she has written thus far. This particular authour follows her Darkest Powers trilogy with this first book in the Darkest Rising trilogy. Set in the world of supernaturals with manipulated DNA, Maya Delaney starts to uncover the truth about her tiny Vancouver Island town. After her best friend, Serena, mysteriously drowns in the middle of a lake, Maya starts to wonder, “What happened?” Well, doesn’t everyone want to know? One year later, mountain lions are being frequently spotted throughout her town and her reactions are unexpected. But, she’s not alone in this. Her best friend, Daniel (was Serena’s boyfriend), has been experiencing some strange premonitions about certain people and situations they’ve come across. The paw-print birthmark isn’t just what interests the new bad boy in town, Rafe; it’s what makes Maya who she is. What she is. “The Gathering” is a perfect name for this novel because it follows the theme of what Kelley Armstrong used for her previous books: “The Summoning,” “The Awakening, “and “The Reckoning.” The title also gives off the assumption that the characters in the first three books will “gather” with the new characters in these three new books. I would recommend these trilogies to any person who adores Kelley Armstrong, or simply because they love a bit of mystery, action, and romance all rolled into one! “The Gathering,” another addition to Kelley Armstrong’s personal genre of bestselling books.

Although I am enjoying the uniqueness of the story for the first book of this Darkest Rising supernatural series I did enjoy the characters in Kelly Armstrong's Darkest Powers more. I found I could not put the 3 books in the Darkest Powers series down where I occasionally read this

“The Gathering” is the first book in a paranormal series by Canadian author Kelley Armstrong. Taking place in a small, privately owned town called Salmon Creek, a teenage girl named Maya finds out that she is a shape shifter. The plot line of the book is very intriguing and diverse. It is exciting to read, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters in the novel suit the traditional teen stereotype, there’s the heroine, the bad boy, the outcast, the nice guy, and the popular girl. Although the characters are similar to what you would find in any other teen novel, the thing that makes them stand out is their powers. Each individual has a unique, unusual supernatural power that they don’t know about. As the book progresses they learn about their abilities and how to use them. Soon enough the teens have to bond together, despite their differences and disagreements to save their loved ones. Since the majority of the book takes place in such a small town you get an in depth look at each character and their evolution throughout the book. The story is told from the main character Maya’s point of view, so you get to experience things the way that she does. This book was a nail bitter and had many unique features such as action filled fights, a romance between characters, and surprises on every page. It was also nominated for the 2013 White Pine award. Overall I loved this book and the way it was constantly shocking me.

The book was an okay read. The beginning, middle and ending were all very slow and honestly, the last few pages were the only good parts. The overall plot was poorly established and it was very predictable.

“Yes you're getting your tattoo." I threw my arms around Dad's neck. "Thank you!" "Hey," Mom said. "I'm the one who had to persuade him it wasn't turning his little girl into a streetwalker." "I never said that," Dad said. "No?" I said. "Cool. Cause I've decided to skip the paw print. I'm thinking of a tramp stamp with flames that says 'Hot in Here.' No wait. Arrows. For directionally challenged guys”

Maya, thinks she's just a normal teenager living in a really small town created by the local research center for its employees and their families, but it turns out she's not 'normal' at all. Sure, she can heal animals a little to well, and local cougars seem to have taken an odd liking to her, but Maya hasn't yet figured out that those things mean anything special. After her best friend, who happens to be captain of the school swim team, mysteriously drowns, there are hints that perhaps Serena's death wasn't the accident it seemed. Serena's ex-boyfriend Daniel is Maya's best friend, but there doesn't seem to be anything romantic developing there - yet. Enter new kid in town, bad boy Rafe, and Maya's inexplicable attraction to him. Turns out Rafe knows a lot about Maya that he's not telling, at least at first.

For those who saw no hint of Daniel's supernatural ability, I'm surprised. The hints were subtle, but there. In one scene, his eyes glowed red. In others, he was faster and stronger than human. Again, this is no different from the hints dropped in the first YA trilogy about other teens and their supernatural abilities. I'm sure in the next book, we'll find out exactly what Daniel and Sam are (I have strong suspicions), as well as Hayley and the others. I found this book to be engaging, and the cliffhanger ending just as tantalizing and frustrating as I've come to expect from Ms. Armstrong. I enjoyed Maya and her animals a great deal, and find I am very curious about Sam, and Daniel. I enjoyed Rafe and his connection with Maya, although I'm expecting some more road bumps along that path, perhaps with best-friend Daniel stepping up to express an interest for more than friendship? I'm also curious if Maya's parents will prove to be villains, or unsuspecting bystanders. Someone in that small town has committed murder, and I'm willing to bet it's someone Maya already knows, and probably trusts.
