The sewing circle of Elm Creek Valley creates an impressive quilt to raise funds to support the men who are serving in Pennsylvania militias. Free blacks are dismayed when their service is not wanted in the Union ranks. The wife and sister of a German pacifist are embarrassed by his unwillingness to fight for the Union cause. And a wife and sweetheart of a Union doctor vie for his attention. The book gives you a glimpse of life from the view of men serving as soldiers and doctors, as well as the men and women remaining behind.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book! Strong female lead characters are inspiring. Stories of love, loss, sacrifice, loyalty, service, duty, friendship, resourcefulness and responsibility are set in the middle of the civil war. Great historical fiction that rings true; encouraging and uplifting without being sappy. Highly recommend.
