I chose this book because it is written in a very unique way which I felt held a lot of promise. Each chapter reflects one day out of each year of the relationship and is essentially a snapshot of what was happening on that specific day. Unfortunately, one of the two characters was extremely unli... Read More »

This was absolutely one of the best books I have read.
A great story, so well written.

One Day is the story of the friendship between Emma and Dexter, beginning on July 15, 1988, when they are two young adults fresh out of university. With each chapter occurring exactly one year later, the reader is offered a glimpse of how their friendship, lives and careers progress, with and without each other.

A friend once pointed this book out to me because the significant date in this book, July 15, is also an important date in my family (i.e., the day my spouse and I first met, as well as our wedding anniversary). I finally picked it up for a read after seeing it cross my path at the library one too many times. It was a bit of a struggle at times to identify with either of them -- Dexter spends a good portion of the book being a fairly unlikable guy, and they both suffer from poor judgment to the extent that I frequently found myself desiring to shake them and shout, "No! Stop! What are you doing?!" Overall, an OK read.

If you loved “When Harry Met Sally” you’ll adore young Brits Emma and Dex as they navigate the 20 years post university in like (always) in love with each other (maybe) in love with others (often) in lust (along the way). Sharp, comic, brilliant dialogue will keep you hooked far into the night or best read it over a weekend. In any case, a must read BEFORE the movie.

On a fateful St. Swithin's Day in 1988, new university grads Em and Dex have what is supposed to be a casual fling and instead, end up the best of friends. One Day revisits this unlikely pair on this same day over the next twenty years as they navigate the new loves and heartbreaks, the broken dreams and compromises, and the failures and successes that make up adult life. At turns funny, sad, poignant, and perceptive, this is an absorbing and intelligent love story disguised as chick lit.

Very nicely written, by turns very funny and unexpectedly touching. Neither light nor too weighty, the book covers both Em and Dex's personal journeys and the cultural journey that UK (or London at least) made from the go-go '80s to the slowdown '90s, with Dexter's fortunes following suit.

an easy and enjoyable read; clever format; like another reader, didn't find the characters well-developed but it worked for this book because it didn't seem like the author was trying for a deep, heavy message - seemed to me like he was striving to write a clever, engaging story... and in my mind he was successful!

Em and Dex, Dex and Em. Meet Dex in his early 20s, where he is well-to-do life, popular with the ladies...Em is the opposite. They share a night together and are forever linked in their twisted friendship. Don't want to spoil it, but not what I expected from the characters. Thoroughly enjoyed.

I had high expectations for this due to all the hype it's gotten, and at first I wasn't that impressed. It takes awhile to get into, but so worth it to keep reading. I'm actually so sad that it's over now and feel it's the type of book I could re-read.

What did I miss? Since so many people are raving, I must have missed something! Glad to have it behind me.

Waited and waited for this book to get better, but it never did. Did not enjoy it at all.
