Absolutely love it!! It's the perfect combination of mystery, romance and yes it's squeaky clean that's one of the things I love best!
Okay -- now I get it-- the author of the books these films are based on was born in england and moved to Canada. as a result, This is the most bizarre combination of Englihsness and north american-- The British tip off is in the themes: the absolute obsession they have with abortion and prostitution. It is so strange to watch characters acting totally British and sounding totally north american.
So what if it "squeaky clean"? I have introduced family down in California to the first season and they just loved it! They find it great to watch an episode in the evening after a day of traffic jams, smog and stress at the office. I also have a friend here in Vancouver who loves watching it with her daughter. Not many murder mysteries on TV these days that kids can watch like there were back in the 70s when I was in elementary and high school!
OK, it's ludicrous. It's nothing like the novels, and better than them. It's all squeaky-clean-costumed and Disneyfied and moral. Imagine a 3-way cross between The Littlest Hobo, Murder She Wrote, and Due South. Murdoch has liquid brown puppydog eyes and can't always keep a straight face at the music-hall dialogue he's required to deliver, but it's okay. Once H.G. Wells and Nikolai Tesla get involved, and the car-chase scene involves horse-and-buggy, you'd better have given yourself over to the pure foolish enjoyment of it, or you'll be in trouble.
I actually thought episode 1 was the beginning of the whole series, I didn't realize until later that I've started watching at season 3.
