Mei Langang is beautiful and feminine onstage while handsome and manly offstage. He becomes a household name in his youth when he defeats the famous Peking Opera master Shisan in a popularity challenge. Later, his affair with vibrant and direct Peking Opera diva Meng Xiaodong saddened his wife Fu Zhifang and mentor-cum-companion Qiu Rubai. They try desperately to stop it because they knew that with Meng, Mei no longer feels lonely. But without that loneliness, Mei's career will be destroyed. In the end, Mei gains universal fame as he performs all over the world, lifting the traditionally lowly status of actors in China. But in the process, he may have paid too great a price.

Mei Lan Fang is the most famous Beijing Opera star. This movie tells the story of his family, love and his love to his country. Mei's first performance of Beijing Opera in New York City was very successful even it was in 1930, the greatest depression. However, when Japan invaded China in 1937, he refused to perform for Japanese. What a man! A true man behind his beautiful feminine onstage image.

What a masterpiece! Following the story of China's beloved Peking Opera stars and how his life was interwoven with the hights and depths of China's history. It's hard to believe that much of this film is based on fact. Truth is certainly stranger than fiction in this film.
