I really enjoy Jen Corace’s illustrations for Cynthia Rylant’s “Hansel and Gretel” so I was happy to see that she has contributed her clean, detailed and stylish illustrations to this book for younger children. This is a very vivid picture book about colour and emotional awareness that is a bit similar in theme to Antoinette Portis’s excellent books “Not a Box” and, particularly, “A Penguin Story”. When a bright orange balloon floats over the meadow a precocious little sheep named Mathilda awakens the other sheep to the enlivening power of colour and imagination. The emphasis is on creativity, self-awareness and expression and de Sève’s text quickly communicates some very nuanced emotional concepts.

The sheep in the story are very charming and expressive whether they are the initially passive and unimaginative gray sheep or “full of wonder” like Mathilda. The pages have a nice balance of white space and clean, colourful illustrations and the printing has been carefully handled to impart a very clear, bright and citrus-y orange which makes the imagery very convincing.

A fun and immediately appealing book to read to younger children between 3 to 6 that might also work well as an early reader book.
