This was another choice for our book club.It opened with a detailed city map in the opening pages, with streets named in a strange blend of Latin and French. And North off to the left. And then the story started, slowly, with a long list of characters being introduced - all with complicated names and relationships. Our Hero Rhennthyl, and his siblings Kethilda, Rousel, and Culthyn. Parents, servants, neighbours, friends, city officials. Many descriptions of the politics and ethics of his area, as well as the different ones from neighbouring states. Details of his own religion, and quotes from several sermons he hears. So much setup information that I started keeping notes. Possibly all needed later on in the series, I thought, but if this hadn't been well recommended, I would have bailed. I stuck it out, and around page 66, things picked up, so I stopped my note taking and started enjoying the story. We see what an Imager is, why that concerns the hero, how it relates to his society. He starts developing his skills, as well as sense of ethics, and widens his scope of knowledge.. Many of those early names seem to have disappeared - although I still have my list just in case. Yes, about 3/4 of the way through I decided I liked this enough to put a library hold on the next one in the series, "Imager's Challenge".
