This is an excellent modern day crime novel set in London, with five exquisitely developed, inter-related characters who meet by chance and inadvertently change each others lives. Each character intersects with the intrigue of the Portobello neighborhood and is emotionally transformed in the course of the tale.

The catalyst for this leisurely paced but tense suspense novel is an envelope full of cash, which gallery owner Eugene Wren finds on Portobello Road after its owner is felled by a heart attack and carted off to the hospital. Eugene doesn't need the money himself, so he posts notices about the find and is soon contacted by other Londoners, all with their own obsessions and despairs. His good act leads, ultimately, to terrible consequences. With a strong sense of place and well-rounded characters from all social strata, Portobello Road is "superlative" (Publishers Weekly).

This was a strange book but after I got into it I enjoyed it.
The three main characters are weird. One is mentally ill, one is a thief and the other is rich but has an addiction to sugar free candies.
A lot different from her other books.
