Welcome to '90s Montreal. It's been five years since the OKA crisis and the sex garage riots; the queers are rioting against assimilation, cocktail AIDS drugs are starting to work, and the city walls on either side of the Main are spray-painted with the words YES or NO. Revolution seems possible to eighteen-year-old Eve, who is pining to get out of her parent's house in Dorval and find a girl who wants to kiss her back. She meets Della: ten years older, mysterious, defiantly non-monogamous, and an avid separatist. Their explosive beginning and volatile relationship paves a path for the personal and political to collide on the night of the referendum.

Really enjoyed "Holding Still for as Long as Possible", so I picked up this book for summer reading. Enjoyable, but not as good as "Holding Still". Whittall does portray the social scene of young radical (white) queer kids in Canada really well. Feels like reading a book about people I know.

amazing! it reminds me of lullabies for little criminals, only better. ms. whittall gets what it's like to be young gay and in love. i'm happy that she writes a true description of love and not a cookie cutter perspective of it. i look forward to reading her other novel.

After reading "Holding Still for as long as Possible", Whittall's second novel (which by the way is the best book I have read in ages), I decided to go back to read her first. Well, it is good, but not as good as her first. The story follows 18-year-old Eve who wants to move out of her parents place into Montreal. Eve meets older-woman Della and a relationship begins. The story follows Eve's relationship with Della and Eve's relationship with her gay roommate. My lips are sealed to the rest of the details, but I will say that it is a fast enjoyable read.
