I couldn't get past the first few pages. I have never, EVER heard anyone describe a person's hair as looking like "a surprised octopus" before. Also, I spotted a glaring grammar error when Clary's friend (I can't remember his name; Robert Sheehan played him in the movie) is introduced. I wish I could remember the sentence exactly, but it was something akin to "He was such-and-such in age, and glasses perched on his head." Now, I don't have a BA in creative writing or anything, but I've read enough books and taken enough writing courses to know that such a sentence doesn't work.

I honestly don't know how this made it past any book editor.

I never wanted to read this book because I thought it was another sappy romance. I finally gave it a try after my friends said it was amazing. All I can say is that I wish I had read it sooner! Sure it has romance, but there are so many plot twists and interesting characters that I was hooked from the very beginning. Can't wait to read the second one!

I've arrived late to the whole ShadowHunters party and so was putting off reading this for a LONG time because I felt that I'd picked up so much about this books plot that there would be no point.

I was wrong.

If you're in the same boat as me (which few probably are; I spend WAY too much time on the book parts of the internet) then very little of the things that were probably spoiled for you are critical plot twists to the story.

If you've been putting off reading this for the same reasons that I have, STOP RIGHT NOW AND TAKE OUT THE BOOK ALREADY!!!!!

Check out my detailed review of this book and the rest of the series at!

I haven’t been a fan of very many young adult books, usually because the story focuses way to much on love triangles. Ugh. This was also pretty much the case for City of Bones; however, after just finishing the novel, I can’t decide how much I enjoyed it. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the greatest thing I have ever read either. I believe it wasn’t until I was 75% of the way through the book that it actually started to get really interesting.

This wasn’t one of my favorite books and I don’t know if I would ever read it again. That kind of depends on how much I enjoy the rest of the series. There were a lot of things that bothered me about it including the love triangle, a couple of the characters, and some of the dialogue was cheesy and forced. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the world and look forward to learning more about it as well as some of the characters. This just barely made it on my “continue with series” list. Only because everyone says it keeps getting better.

SPOILER!!!!!!!I neeeeeeeed the second book. Why is Jace and Clary related??????? That is so unfair. They would be so cute together

While visiting a club one evening with her friend Simon, Clary witnesses something she shouldn't, but even more disturbingly, something no one else present appeared to have been able to see: several peculiar-looking teenagers murdering an otherworldly being who, upon death, vanishes into thin air. A few days later her mother disappears, and Clary herself is attacked by a ghastly creature in her own home. Suddenly, Jace, one of the teens from the club, comes to her aid and whisks her away to the "Institute," where she learns more about what happened to her mother, and who these mysterious, demon-murdering people are.

This series was very popular at the library a few years ago, and so I'd been curious about it for some time. However, I'd until now hesitated to pick up the first book because of the expected commitment (there are 6, all 400+ pages!). From a teen readers' advisory perspective I'm glad I read this first installment, but at the same time I don't feel any desire to continue the series due to a few too many fantasy and relationship tropes that I've seen so many times before. Teens would probably eat this up, but I'm afraid I'm a few decades too late.

This book is one of my favourites, I love the plot and just the story itself. I think the suspense, love and most of all the fighting is what makes this what it is.
If you like those kinds of things then I'm almost positive you will love this book.

Read entire series. This one's decent, but for all of you people out there who don't dig romance, BEWARE! Especially true for the last three, but there are just too many cheesy sex scenes. Not kidding.

An amazing start for a world worth exploring! The start for other amazing, attention grabbing books. I love this book series with all its prequels and sequels too. Five out of five stars.

I had a great time reading City of Bones after binge watching the television adaptation titled Shadowhunters on Freeform. Honestly, the writing is mediocre, and Cassandra Clare manages to take every fantasy trope and roll them all into a giant, messy burrito of a book. And yet, it totally works as fun, fast-paced, popcorn, Urban Fantasy fare that will help you escape from the "mundane-ness" of reality. Imagine if the characters from Twilight were a part of the Harry Potter Universe with a good shake of supernaturals added in for good flavor, and you will get the basic premise of the book. Personally, this was just the kind of mindless entertainment that I needed, and I've already begun the next books in the series. As an aside, I think that the television series is much better than the book because it focuses more on the tertiary characters who are far more interesting than the protagonists Jace and Clary. Also, I'm a Malec shipper for life!

Great book about demons and Shadowhunters (demon slayers). This book becomes quite dark, interesting, and is a very good book. Highly suggest you read this book!

This is one of my favourite books. I love the characters, particularly Clary and Jace. The way Cassie Clare writes is wonderful, it is beautifully descriptive and witty. I fell in love with Jace in this book, and he remains my favourite male character. I also love Clary, she is 'one of us'.

The back:
Their hidden world is about to be revealed...
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder--much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it's hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary's mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon.
But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know....
