This is a retelling of the Rimsky-Korsakov opera The Snow Maiden (Snegurochka). The plot is actually similar to that of Disney's Little Mermaid film: a supernatural maiden becomes fascinated with humans, goes to live among them, falls in love with a man, and is willing to make a great sacrifice for the sake of her love. My one complaint is that the Snow Maiden's personality is not well developed in this book; there is more focus on the love story than on the heroine herself.

The illustrations are the best part of the book: they are truly gorgeous. Ruth Sanderson has done her homework, and every page is brimming with authentic motifs from Russian folk art. Moreover, the faces of her characters are so lifelike. It feels as if the snow maiden could step right off the page and into real life. The cover art shimmers with metallic details.
