Cult horror film from Canada that fuses the werewolf story with female adolescence. Two moody sisters stage their own suicides (shades of "Harold & Maude") until one gets bit by a werewolf and starts to change. Lycanthropy becomes a clumsy, but effective metaphor for puberty. This focus on teenage girls gives some originality to a genre that does not always treat its women well and both actresses are convincing. It goes on a little long and has a rather cheap, grubby look which makes it feel that you're watching a video from the 80s. Clearly they spent most of their budget on blood. Mimi Rogers (aka ex-Mrs. Tom Cruise) plays their clueless mother. Could've been called "I Was a Teenage Werewolf," but the title was already taken.

It made me laugh and scared me silly.

There is a scene where the two sisters consult with the school nurse to see if the pain and hair growth one is experiencing are part of becoming a woman or signs she is turning into a werewolf. It's the funniest thing I've seen in ages.

I first heard of this film when it came out, in a feminist magazine... a smart, cool version of the werewolf story, shot through with dark humour. The central characters are two teenage sisters, morbidly miserable with their dead-end town. The werewolf myth is examined through the lens of puberty (hair in weird places!) The effects are definitely old-school (not digital), but effective classic horror. A straightforward blood n' guts tale, plus teen angst.
