It is always amazing to me what some consider good and others recognize as crap. To me this film is crap. Basically a toned down version of The Clansman (birth of a nation), its heroine is in actuality a somewhat mentally ill woman who can't figure out the reality of her situation. How this film earns 10 academy awards isn't a testament to how good the movie is but how screwed up our society was in those days and somewhat continues to be today.

Perhaps it is time for a remake and/or reboot where "Mammy" and all the other black characters who live at Tara don't love their incredibly kind masters QUITE SO MUCH. Just saying. After all, there must have been at least one freed slave who was smart enough and adventurous enough to relish the options that were finally available to them as "freemen". Instead they just continue to hang around the plantation spouting "Yes'm Miss Scarlet" as if the "Proclamation Declaration" hadn't ever happened. Sigh.

Congratulations "Gone with the WInd"! You are 75 years old this year and still you just a beautiful as ever. It is hard to believe your director Victor Fleming just finished directing the Wizard of Oz when he started work on you. He had a great team to back him up. Cinematographer Ernest Haller, who shot "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Lilies of the field" gave a sweeping image to the movie. Movie soundtracks are very important, so I can see why you picked Max Steiner. He is well remembered for the soundtracks to such famous movies as "Casablanca" and "Top Hat". I have saved the best for last. The cast is outstanding! Could anyone else have given Rhet Butler the charm, good looks, and acting skill to such a character. Vivien Leigh is beautiful as the daughter to Thomas Mitchell and Barbara O'Neil plays her mother Ellen. Other great character actors are Leslie Howard as the man who spurns the love of Vivien Leigh. Victor Jory is the ruthless plantation manager. Hattie McDaniel and Butterfly McQueen put in historic performances as the house maids. There just is not enough space to list all the great actors in this large cast. Let us just say the cast is outstanding. "Gone With The Wind" Happy 75th Birthday, but get ready for many more generations to love you just as much as the millions of fans in the past!

If you love horses, be warned, this movie has the most reckless and dangerous horsemanship I've ever seen, and one horse we see is starving - not nice!!! Also, the movie is very long, and very old so the acting is... not subtle. I got to like Scarlett after a while. Mammy steals the show (and apparently won an Oscar for it). The movie doesn't pack the emotional wallop of the book.
