IF you read or write Victorian stories, you will want this resource. I found her attempts at humor annoying, but I suppose she wanted to keep it "light" while she discusses things most people find disgusting. Also where one "naughty…

A humourous book on hygiene and sex in Victorian times

I found this a very annoying book. The author has turned up many interesting facts about the lifestyle of the 19th century and then presented them in a patronizing style that wears very thin after a few pages. Does she not realize that in…

An educational and entertaining romp through personal etiquette for any proper Victorian lady -- from how to correctly dress yourself in endless required layers of clothing, keep up with personal hygiene without the aid of modern…

This book was laugh out loud funny in many chapters! I really enjoyed Oneill's writing. That said, I was disappointed by the lack of notes. I am sure this was a choice made for "the ease of reading" but I would have preferred more context…

If you are at all curios about what it was "really" like for women back in the Victorian era - Then - Therese Oneill's brutally frank and equally humorous book "Unmentionable" should provide you with some very eye-opening…

Author gleefully take away rose tinted glasses off of fans of Regency Romance, Victorian British literature & certain manor TV series and stomped on them. Reality of back then so nauseating, but it make me wonder the health craziness &…

This book was both very informative and entertaining, and truly horrifying. What people believed as far as science, health, etc was startlingly wrong.

I couldn't quite shake the mind-bending mental image of Miss Manners being pottie-mouthed in an "oh, so refined" way. I did chuckle through the book, which is full of interesting facts. The one drawback is that the style of the book…

If you are a fan of beautifully depicted historical romances such as those written by Jane Austen, but find your mind frequently drifting to thoughts of the "unmentionable" yet practical concerns of daily life, such as "how did they go to…

Although I enjoyed reading this for the information it provided, I did not prefer the humorous almost sarcastic tone of the author. I know she was trying to be funny but wasn't for me.

Gross and funny, this book made me grateful for all the modern conveniences I often take for granted. Oneill acts as tour guide and mentor to the 21st century woman time-traveling in the Victorian era.

I loved every single page--it's chockablock full of facts and amusing anecdotes that will make you want to stay in the 21st century. It's like the 19th century version of going out for cocktails with your best girlfriends.

This book is the perfect antidote to every "I wish I lived in the times of Little House on the Prairie-Anne of Green Gables-Little Women" compulsion you have ever felt. Snarky, hilarious and full to the brim with feminist observations,…

It's a comedy written in the 2nd person perspective, which I had NOT anticipated. It stops the book reading like a dusty tome, but it does mean that, no matter how well researched it is (and it does seem to be beautifully researched), I…

Fascinating account of the Victorian era that was about as romantic as a bad case of body odour. Very funny folklore covering a variety of awkward topics that I can't mention here.
