Description

We are excited to announce that Markham Public Library will be partnering with York University students from the Educational Studies program to deliver a Phonics Reading Club for Kindergarten and Grade 1 students.

In this program, our goal is to support children in learning the foundational skills to become strong readers. Children will be placed in small groups with York U student to support them in reading. Each week there will be a focus on different letter sounds and opportunities to practice blending of sounds.

In the Kindergarten program, we will focus on:

  • identifying alphabet letters/sounds
  • blending of sounds (consonant, vowel, consonant)
  • reading simple words/sentences

In the Grade 1 program, we will focus on:

  • strengthening their reading skills by focusing on rhyming words, word families
  • reading sentences/ short passages
