Chapter 1 - Starting a Business – Incorporation and working with partners.

We are happy to introduce our new series of professional workshops – Business Legal 101. In this program, which includes multiple workshops, we will discuss various legal aspects of operating a business in Canada and will answer your questions about the same. For the next four sessions, we will be covering the following topics (please feel free to let us know any additional legal questions that you might have):

Thursday, April 15 at 6:00 PM Starting a Business – Incorporation and working with partners. This workshop will cover the basics of incorporation and what legal documents you will need to protect your corporation and your investment while working with partners. We will discuss the considerations of whether to incorporate or not, whether to incorporate federally or provincially, how to approach the process and which steps to follow to complete it successfully. We will also cover the most common legal questions and issues arising from working with partners in a business. 

Thursday, May 20 at 6:00 PM The most important legal documents for business owners This workshop will cover the legalities of operating a business in Canada – how to protect your business and your investment from future legal claims, which legal documents will assist in protecting you from future legal liabilities. We will discuss legal documents relating to general business agreements, terms of use for websites and mobile apps, employment agreements and more. 

Thursday, June 17 at 6:00 PM Purchase of business – Assets vs. Shares This advanced workshop will discuss two alternative ways of purchasing a business – who prefers what and how to approach the transaction.We will discuss legal aspects of the transactions and the most common pitfalls for business owners to avoid. 

Thursday, July 15 at 6:00 PM – Intellectual Property of a Business We will discuss various types of intellectual property that might be created and accumulated by a business, its value, the importance of its understanding and protection. We will provide a detailed overview of the most common types of intellectual property – Trademarks, Patents, Copyright and the processes of their development and protection.
